CCMS Cell Phone Parking
September 4, 2024
Dear Parents and Guardians,
We are writing to inform you of a new practice regarding cell phone storage during the school day. While our policy has always been that students have their cell phones off and away during the school day, we find that the temptation for students to engage with their cellphones while they are in class proves to be too great and in turn, causes a distraction. Starting Monday, September 16, 2024, students will be required to "park" their cell phones in designated areas immediately upon entering each classroom. This means that students will not have access to their phones during class time. Students will receive specific instructions from their individual classroom teachers regarding this process. At the end of the class period, students will pick up their parked phone and move on to their next class.
Please note that cell phone use remains prohibited at CCMS, this includes passing time and lunch.
We understand that cell phones have become an integral part of our daily lives, but research has shown that their constant presence can be a significant distraction for students. Studies have found that frequent checking of phones can lead to decreased focus, attention, and academic performance. By creating a phone-free zone during class time, we aim to foster a more conducive learning environment for all students.
To help with the transition, we encourage you to discuss this practice with your child and emphasize the importance of staying focused and engaged during class. We also recommend that you explore alternative ways for your child to stay connected with friends and family outside of school hours.
In the event you need to be in touch with your student during the school day you are welcome to email or call our main office at (845)534-8009 x. 4000 or CCMSMainOffice@Cornwallschools.com.
We believe that this practice will have a positive impact on our students' academic success and overall well-being. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
Sincerely,
Kate Polumbo Maria Wieber Paul Brennan
