Energy Drinks

We need to address a growing concern regarding the consumption of energy drinks, such as Celsius and Alani Nu, by our middle school students. We have observed an increase in these beverages being brought to school, and we want to inform you about the potential health risks associated with their consumption, as well as our school's policy on these drinks.

The American Academy of Pediatrics has stated that energy drinks are not appropriate for children and adolescents, due to the high levels of caffeine these drinks contain. AACP recommends that children between ages 12 and 18 should not consume more than 100 milligrams of caffeine per day and should avoid energy drink entirely.

Energy drinks contain high levels of caffeine, sugar, and other stimulants that can have detrimental effects on adolescents. Research indicates that these drinks are dangerous for children. These drinks often contain significantly more caffeine than sodas or coffee, which can lead to Increased heart rate and blood pressure, anxiety, nervousness, sleep disturbances, insomnia, headaches and stomachaches. In addition, these drinks often contain other stimulants such as taurine and guarana, which can interact with caffeine and further exacerbate health risks. As we know, adolescents' brains are still developing, and high levels of stimulants can negatively impact cognitive function, mood, and behavior. Some energy drinks can have a diuretic effect, leading to dehydration, especially during physical activity.

For the health and safety of our students, energy drinks like Celsius and Alani Nu are not permitted on school grounds. Any such beverages brought to school will be confiscated. We understand that students may seek these drinks for a perceived energy boost, but we believe that healthy alternatives, such as water, fruit, nutritious snacks and appropriate sleep routines, are far more beneficial.

We encourage you to discuss the risks of energy drink consumption with your child and to reinforce the importance of making healthy choices. We are committed to providing a safe and healthy learning environment for all our students.
