CCMS Announces: 25 Book Campaign!

                                        October 3, 2023

Dear Families,

Cornwall Central Middle School will launch a new reading initiative called the Twenty-Five Books Campaign this school year.

What is the Twenty-Five Books Campaign?
The 25 Books Campaign is a school-wide initiative encouraging all students to read twenty-five books during the academic school year. The campaign encourages students to read various texts and topics across different genres. Staff and family members are welcome to participate as well!  The purpose of this initiative is to:
•    Improve vocabulary knowledge and usage
•    Encourage a love of reading
•    Introduce students to a variety of genres and authors
•    Improve reading and writing skills.

Why Twenty-Five Books?
Research has shown that middle school students need to read a million words a year to develop sufficient vocabulary to continually improve their reading proficiency (1,000,000 words or the equivalent of 25 books). With increased vocabulary knowledge comes improved reading comprehension.  Students are encouraged to read fiction and nonfiction chapter books, magazine and newspaper articles, graphic novels, and their textbooks.  All of these types of texts count towards the twenty-five book goal!

Incentives and Celebrations
CCMS staff has a variety of reading incentives that include classroom celebrations, quarterly assemblies, recognition certificates, author visits, pizza and ice cream parties, Get Caught Reading prizes, Book scavenger hunts, and more!

How can you help?
Please encourage your students to read nightly to reach their goal of twenty-five books by the end of the school year. Ask questions about what they are reading and monitor their Annotated Bibliography, where they will keep track of their reading.

Thank you for your support!  Please reach out with any questions.

Sincerely,
CCMS ELA Department
