The 9 member Board of Education is elected by residents of Cornwall Central School District, who are 18 years of age or over, citizens of the U.S.A., and a resident of the school district for at least 30 days. In addition, a qualified voter must be registered with the Orange County Board of Elections and/or the Cornwall School District. Members serve without salary and are responsible for policy-making and overseeing a public school district's affairs, personnel, and properties. Each is elected for a term of 3 years.Elections are held annually. Board meetings are open to the public and are held twice each month with the exception of July and August which sees one meeting per month. Meetings typically begin at 7:00 p.m. at either Cornwall Central High School or Cornwall Elementary School.

Increase community engagement
Develop stronger partnerships with parents, caregivers, and community organizations to support student learning and well-being both inside and outside the classroom.
Leverage relationships with local businesses, nonprofits, and higher education institutions to provide mentorship, internships, and enrichment opportunities for students.
Facilities
Foster Community Engagement in Facilities Decisions
Involve stakeholders in facilities planning, including parents, staff, and community members, to ensure transparency and support.
Promote Fiscal Responsibility in Capital Planning
Oversee long-term capital planning, ensuring fiscal responsibility in facility maintenance, construction, and modernization.
Finance
Align Budget with Student Achievement Priorities
Ensure financial decisions directly support instructional programs, equity, and student success.
Budget according to a strategic plan – allow for long term planning for multi-year initiatives
Instruction
Advance Student Achievement and Equity
Ensure instructional programs are designed to raise achievement and close opportunity gaps.
Support the use of Data to Drive Instructional Improvement
Monitor student performance data to identify needs, inform instruction, and evaluate program effectiveness.
