• BIOLOGY is a full year Regents course w/ labs. Students will learn about the human body & its systems & diseases. Simple organisms, plants, genetics, ecology & evolution will also be covered.

    COURSE MATERIALS

3 ring binder with loose leaf paper, pencils, blue or black pens, simple calculator, colored pencils, (all used in class and on lab assignments).

    CLASSWORK

*Joining Google Classroom will be required to receive additional info as needed

(we will do this on the 1st day of class).

*Students are required to keep in contact with other students in class, and myself, in case they are absent from class.  (Please be sure to contact me before 2pm via email)

Given today’s technology, “I didn’t know” is not an option to not be prepared for make-up work or classwork upon your return. Tests will always be known ahead of time, so plan accordingly if you are not in class. It is your responsibility to find out, that day, what you missed if you were not in class.

    LABS

MUST BE COMPLETED AND TURNED IN BY THE END OF THE LAB CYCLE or due date. If you are having a problem finishing up your lab, see me BEFORE the end of the lab cycle! *Labs received late will receive a grade of 2. Labs not completed will jeopardize your ability to qualify sitting for the Regents exam in June.

    GRADING

    Tests 50%, Labs 30%, Quizzes/Hw/Classwork 20%

Parents and students have access to grades online through Parent Portal.

    * If you are absent for a test, quiz or lab, they must be made up the day you return. If you do not make them up, a grade of 0 will be given.

A grade of a “1” in Parent Portal means the work is owed.

    PLEASE KNOW

*late work will NOT be accepted.

    * be sure you are fully prepared for class as passes will be on an emergency basis only

    * disruptive behavior will not be tolerated

    Class Rules:

    - Be seated in assigned seat when the bell rings

    - Do not eat or drink in class

    - No talking, unless participating in class discussion

    - No physical interaction, keep your hands to yourself and be respectful of others

    - Be respectful of our classroom, do not write on the furniture etc.

I really do enforce the dress code AND the electronic devices code.

Appropriate dress is required for both boys and girls. If I feel your attire is not appropriate you will be asked to either cover up or change and your parents will be notified.  If it continues, you will be written up.

**As everyone knows, the use of cell phones or other electronic devices is NOT permitted in class without permission from the teacher. If a student is caught using these in class, without permission there will be consequences. Unfortunately, too many times students have been found texting during class time. This is both disruptive and can jeopardize the integrity of class tests and quizzes. Just as important, taking pictures or recording individuals in a classroom is also not permitted.  Most students think it is ok to do such things because it seems to be "the norm" to do so of whomever, wherever and whenever they want. However, without proper permission, they could be jeopardizing a student's or adult's privacy, which may extend beyond the classroom.**

STUDENTS WILL BE REQUIRED TO PUT THEIR PHONES IN A DESIGNATED POCKET EVERY TIME THEY COME INTO MY CLASSROOM. IF YOU DO NOT WANT YOUR CHILD TO DO THIS, PLEASE BE SURE THEY DO NOT BRING THEIR PHONE INTO THE CLASSROOM.

***Your workload and responsibilities will be very different from middle school. I will not chase you around and be your personal assistant to remind you of work that is owed. You must be sure to check your grades on Parent Portal/School Tool

Here are some study suggestions :

-go to science tutoring with NHS

-get a biology tutor (contact guidance for potential tutors)

    -come for help with me

-go over your handouts/notes each day from each day's lessons

summarize by making charts/graphs/note cards etc.

-write down any questions to ask in class

-study/review lessons in a well-lit, quiet, "electronic/distraction-free" area (not on your bed)

-watch videos, take notes & re-watch if needed

-do/use the review packet I hand out for most units and actually read what you are filling out in them.

-have someone verbally quiz you on the material you say you know

-actually turn off your phones when you go to bed, sleep & learning go hand in hand

I tell my students that reading over their notes is not studying. Studying is an active act- writing, reading, saying things out loud, repetition and application of material. In order to be successful in passing this course, the Regents, students not only have to memorize the material, they must be able to apply the material to “real life” scenario type questions.
