• HEALTH CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS AND

    GRADING POLICY

    The objective of Health is to cultivate health skills that help teens and adults promote health and contribute to overall wellness.

    The following skills will be developed and practiced through various classroom activities, tests, quizzes and projects.

     

    • Goal setting - interactive process that requires planning and revision throughout the application of the process.

    • Communication - interactive process between and among individuals to clarify ideas, thoughts, needs and feelings.

    • Decision making - requires speculation into the future based on a particular action. 

    • Refusal Skills - involves specific strategies to refuse involvement in behaviors which may harm or put your health at risk.

    • Self-Management Skills - actual practice of healthful behavior.

    • Conflict Resolution - involves specific strategies to resolve conflicts peacefully.

    • Stress Management - involves the use of specific techniques that reduce and manage stress. 

    • Advocacy - calls for the use of persuasion to promote positive health choices personally and for others.

    • Accessing information - addresses the important steps to take to get valid health information and appropriate health services. 


    Topics:  These skills will be incorporated into the following topics 

     

    1. A Healthy lifestyle - understanding health and wellness and taking charge of one’s health.

     

    1. Mental Health - stress, anxiety, depression, loss and grief.

     

    1. Physical Activity  and Fitness - benefits, elements of fitness, planning a program. 

    2. Nutrition - influences, nutrients, guidelines, healthy eating. 

     

    1. Managing weight and Eating Disorders - BMI, eating disorders, body composition.

     

    1. Communicable Diseases - HIV/AIDS, STDs/STIs, transmission and prevention.

     

    1. Parenting Education - Contraception/ Abstinence, parenting styles 

     

    1. Tobacco, Alcohol, Medicines and Drugs - effects, misuse/abuse, underage drinking.  



    Projects and Activities:  some will be group work and some will be individual

     

    • Lifestyle Survey 

    • The “ME” I work to be project: Boat Poster

    • Analyzing Advertisement assignment 

    • Food Label Lab Assignment

    • Health Food Menu project 

    • Mental Health Walk In My Shoes Project

    • Vision Board Project 

    • Medicine and Drug Brochure

    • Infectious Disease Project

    • HPV debate

    Grading: 

    • Test/Quizzes - 30%

    • Projects - 30%

    • Class-work/Homework & Activities - 30%

    • Participation/Behavior/Attendance - 10%

    • Final Exam - 10% (End of the Year averaged in to final MP)

    Student Expectations:

    Students are expected to come to class prepared and ready to learn. This includes getting plenty of sleep/rest, eating healthy meals and taking care of any personal needs, 

    (Cellphones, sleeping, electronic devices, hoods or hats (unless religious) are NOT allowed in the classroom)

    Use of bathroom facilities are allowed at the beginning of class and only if a real emergency during class.

     

    1. Students must be prepared for class with a pen/pencil, notebook and his/her folder, handouts and “Do Now” questions. 

    2. It is the students responsibility to make up missed work when absent. Please ask your peers first what you missed then be sure to see me at the end of class to get any worksheets or assignments you may need,

    3. ALL WORK IS EXPECTED TO BE HANDED IN ON TIME!!! Late assignments cause you stress and me more work, and will ONLY be accepted one day late. IF you need help with time management skills, ask and I will help you.

    4. IF you don’t understand an assignment, are curious about your grade, or need to talk to someone, PLEASE REACH OUT TO ME SOMEWAY AND I WILL BE HERE TO HELP YOU! If I don't know, I can't help you.

    5. EVERY student will be respectful and courteous to all in the classroom

    And ALWAYS do your best!!
